Goliath The Return

After a change in personal circumstances I thought I had given up figure hobby permenantly. However after selling off my entire collection I decided to make a small comeback. I found this amazing Goliath figure from Lucid Eye. Glad I kept the boy David conversion. I will be redoing The Hebrews and Philistines in 28mm for Chariot Rampant.

CP Miniatures 28mm Sumerian Spearmen

Just finished this very fine Sumerian spear unit. I have based in 2 per stand to allow more flexible use. Rather than usual Impetus style I have gone for 3 rows which I think looks very effective as a spear block when only using 12 men. Usual Army Painter wash. Other unit seen for comparison is from Newline Designs. The CP Miniatures. Really stand out. Chariot Rampant will be visiting Sumeria soon.

Here is a rather imposing Sumerian King. Part of new 28mm range from CP Miniatures. These are also done in 15mm by Museum Miniatures.

More of the battle Hebrew v Philistines

More shots of the defeat of the Philistines. A tough fought battle that ended in slaughter.
The battle opened with a dual between Goliath David. As in the biblical story Goliath on this occasion suffered a deadly sling shot between the eyes. Dice throws allowed the Philistines to pass all courage tests and continue the battle.
The Ark gave a +1 to courage like a general. Fighting on a small table and multi basing meant a lot of units were in range of King and the Ark giving +2 courage. However the Hebrews rolled high anyway. Probably the site of Goliath being killed by a boy was enough to convince the Hebrews divine intervention would win the day.
The chariots came in close and were shot up badly before they could do any harm to the Hebrews. The Hebrew forces were light spear ×2. Spearmen ×1. Ferocious warrior×1. Expert spear(King Saul). And 2 skimishers to represent the various Israelite tribes.

Hebrew skirmishes fire deadly volleys into the 2nd chariot squadron. Luck and support from another unit of light javelinmen slaughtered these conifdent  troops.

The Philistine chariots prepare to ride down some Hebrews. Underestimating their foe they retire from the field without striking a blow. The Hebrew light javelin tore through their ranks.

Hebrew Army for Biblical Rampant

I have put together this force for Biblical Rampant 24 points. Ark is not included in points. This is representing an army of king Saul(front right unit). Boy David is front right.

King Saul

Here is King Saul with his men of valour. They are ready to fight the dreaded Philistines, confident in victory. The day will not end well for defeat will come and King Saul will fall on his own sword. Figures are Castaway Arts mainly with Newline Designs and Miniature Designs. Saul is converted a Eureka upcoming Trojan Wars figure. The figure shaking fist is Ral Partha.

Hebrew Skirmishers

Small addition to Hebrew army around the time of David and Saul. Couple of Foundry Amorite/Cannanites with very nice Castaway Arts Sculpts from their dedicated 28mm range. Castaway Arts do some of the best spears.

Eureka Trojan War Comparison

Here is a Comparison image of upcoming Eureka Miniatures 28mm Trojan Wars. Middle figure is Foundry. 2nd from left if a leader from upcoming Stone Age Denisovan (chief). Fantastic sculpts begging to be panted up. Lovely match for Foundry and Redoubt etc.

David and Goliath

Here we have the exciting dual between the boy David and mighty Goliath. David is a conversion from Dark Fable Egyptian children model and Goliath is Castaway Arts. Thought this might be good to start a Chariot Rampant battle. Like a leader combat challenge.

Assyrian Heavy Spearmen

2 units of the wonderful Foundry Assryians. Painted most of these a while back. Not as well painted as some I have seen, but need to progress on and happy with overall unit look. The bases are from Big Red Bat to go with To The Strongest Rules. I like the look of spearmen centred on base like this. This is the 3rd time they been rebased over the years and the last!!!

Uratian Army WIP

Thought I would show some of the work in progress for Urartian army. Here are converted Mede provincial troops for Relic Numidians and a couple of Foundry Babylonians. Relic are quite slim so I bulked up hair to give more Foundry proportions and this was further helped by sheepskin/fur cape. These are based on various early Mede images form Assyrian reliefs which show both long tunic and boots as well as short tunic without boots and some fringes also. The Guard unit is made from Foundry Assyrians with more pointed helmets(green stuff) based on Urartian helmet examples. Shields are from Irregular/Eureka to give different look. These may also serve as foot Babylonian guard.

Elamite Chariot

Here the Elamite Army for To The Strongest rules, slowly takes shape with addition of 1st Elamite chariot/kallapani cart. this is one of my early Army Painter jobs that was just needing base finished. This is from the 28mm Eureka range with 2 added donkeys. I perhaps should have modelled the yoke to fit over extra donkeys...too late now. This chariot is packed with bowmen. The reliefs show a driver with 3 crew but I do like the packed archers look. The debate is... did they fire from mobile carts or hop off to deliver massive bow fire. Of course both tactics are possible. I will have 3x units of 2 chariots and one unit will be the Foundry Assyrian carts (which can be heavy armed archers). The nobles (mentioned in text) will be Assyrian style heavy chariots as would be likely.

Elamite Army

Keen to see foot print my Elamite army for To The Strongest would take up. This is 131 points with 15cm grid and Impetus unit size in mind. The table is 5 foot 5 inches long and 3 foot. Gives good indication how 6 by 4 foot would be. Seem tight and not much space for terrain. Units are forced into reserve by table width but may be good for tactics etc. With 6 Kallapani Carts and 2 nobles chariots it is going to look good IMHO when finished.

Elamite Cavalry

Ashurbanipal receives messengers at the royal court warning the Elamites are mustering a large army intent on crushing the Assyrians. Ashurpanipal quietly absorbs the news. The master of war has been waiting for this opportunity to once more glorify himself and the nation in battle......He stands up form the throne with fire in his eyes.."Let there be war" Painted up these fine Cavalry quite a few years ago. Will multi base them into units of 5 later for To The Strongest (Impetus sizes as usual). The figures are from Eureka 28mm Elamite range. Some very nice detail on them and go well with Foundry Assyrian range. They could also serve as Babylonians.

Elamite Foot guard

Here is my representation of Elamite guards. I feel it likely that such a unit could appear in NeoElamite armies during the Assyria wars. In reliefs only foot archers appear which were likely to be the majority of the army. I used some of Victrix plastic Carthaginians mainly adding Assyrian style shields and creating some Urartian style helmets which were in use all over the Near East. I chose mixed colours as no actual evidence of clothing colours available for Elamite. Did couple of off white/buff tunic as done by Angus McBride. This unit is the start of my To The Strongest army to face Assyrians. These rules allow nice impetus size units and basing freedom in the grid system.

Pharaoh Smites The Foe

This is Middle Kingdom Egypt. An Amorite scout is captured by Nubian soldiers and brought before the mighty Pharaoh Nebtakara. Here the before the battle lines even join Pharaoh smites the enemy just like the iconic temple scenes. He is a warrior king that few men dare to challenge..... This Pharaoh is a Dark Fable figure with crown added with Green stuff, The short hair guard is Castaway Arts. Victim is also castaway Arts with hair added(Lullubi/Gutian). Rest are Newline Designs recent Old kingdom range with Castaway Arts shields.

Joshua at Jericho

Trumpets blast and the Hebrews roar and the walls come tumbling down. In this scene Joshua raises his sword in triumph as the walls of Jericho come crashing down. All will be put to the sword. No living thing will be left alive. Joshua here is based on the artist Jonny Schumates image. Joshua is heavily converted from Castaway Arts Indian figure applying kilt and armour with Mad Robot Miniatures head. Trumpets are from Castaway Arts colonial range on Hebrew command. Rest figures are Foundry and one Cutting Edge. Very happy with this dramatic base and great fun planning and making. Really enjoyed converting Joshua with Green Stuff.
